Councils Recognised for Commitment to NSW Communities
20 NSW councils were tonight recognised for outstanding contributions to their communities.
The NSW Minister for Fair Trading, Youth, and Volunteering Linda Burney, the Leader of the Opposition, Barry O'Farrell, the Shadow Minister for Local Government, Chris Hartcher and the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, joined radio personality Adam Spencer, 250 councillors, council staff, industry representatives and sponsors at the Annual Local Government Awards in Sydney.
Among the recipients were Randwick City Council, which took out the prestigious AR Bluett Award for the greatest relative progress; and Blue Mountains City Council, the overall winner in the Kellogg Heart Foundation awards, for encouraging residents to live a healthy lifestyle.
Eurobodalla Council was recognised twice for commitment to Youth Week activities.
Co-host for the Awards and President of the Local Government Association of NSW, Cr Genia McCaffery, said Local Government is leading the way on sustainable service delivery.
"The theme of this year's Local Government Week is 'A Climate for Change', and councils have certainly proven their commitment to delivering sustainable services," Cr McCaffery said.
"These awards recognise councillors and council staff who did their best because of their passion for their communities and the difference they can make."
Awards Co-host and President of the Shires Association of NSW, Cr Bruce Miller, said he was delighted with the number of regional and rural councils nominated for awards.
"Several rural and regional councils were nominated for awards tonight, which is a great indication of the commitment they have to their communities, despite restraints on their resources," Cr Miller said.
"Local Government has a number of initiatives underway to reduce greenhouse emissions and make the delivery of services more sustainable, so the theme 'A Climate for Change' is fitting."
