Councillors Commitment to Communities Honoured

Six NSW councillors have been honoured for their commitment and service to their communities at the annual Local Government Association conference in Broken Hill.

Councillors Anwar Khoshaba OAM (Fairfield), John H Brodie (Holroyd), Ian Longbottom (Lane Cove) Patrick Sheehy AM (Penrith) and Meg McKay Oates (Campbelltown) were today awarded with the honorary title of Emeritus Mayor for serving a minimum of three one-year terms as mayor.

Councillor Rob Pollock (Eurobodalla Shire), along with councillors Sheehy and McKay Oates were also awarded with an Outstanding Service Award, which recognises 20 years or more service to NSW Local Government.

President of the Local Government Association, Cr Genia McCaffery says the awards acknowledge a tireless commitment to serving local communities.

"Mayors, through vision, energy and commitment, provide leadership to meet the challenges facing their  communities, said Cr McCaffery.

"They dedicate their time to making our communities places where people want to live.

"Service in local government - especially as mayor - is extremely rewarding but can also be quite challenging. I commend the recipients on their enthusiasm, passion and dedication."

The 2008 Local Government Association conference continues tomorrow with an address from the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Barbara Perry MP and Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell.

The 2008 Local Government Association Conference is sponsored by Country Energy.
