Healthy Local Government Grants Program

In 2005, the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW and the NSW Department of Health offered councils the opportunity to apply for funding under the Healthy Local Government Grants Program. The aim of the Program is to build council capacity to work in areas that promote the health of communities and prevent chronic disease, and in this way to improve the health of communities. Applications, which closed on 14 December 2005, were invited in four Categories:

1.      Active communities

2.      Skin cancer prevention

3.      Community safety and injury prevention; and

4.      Capacity building: partnerships, equity and special populations.

The Associations received an excellent response to this Program from councils across NSW.  Details of the successful applications are provided below.

Sun Protection 

  • Conargo Shire Council, Sun protection structures children's playgrounds, ($14,508)
  • Gilgandra Shire Council, Sunsmart Pool Project,  ($20,000)
  • Greater Hume Shire Council, Shade Sail Child Care Centre, ($7,500)
  • Kyogle Council, Shade structures children's play areas, ($19,737)
  • Bourke Shire Council, 'Made in the shade' project (mobile shade structures, education program & purchase dermoscope), ($15,745)

  • Blacktown City Council, Emerton water safety project, ($12,600)
  • Great Lakes Council, Safe communities network, ($20,000)
  • Newcastle City Council, Water safety for African refugees, ($10,000)
  • Baulkham Hills Shire Council, Falls prevention for the aged, ($11,588 )
  • Warringah Council, Life ball for seniors falls prevention project, ($15,000)
  • Richmond Valley Council, Cattle transport and saleyard safety, ($16,100)

  • Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC), Active transport project parents & children at council preschools & childcare centres, ($50,000)
  • North Sydney Council, Healthy pool food project, ($20,000)
  • Lismore City Council, Physical activity project targeting Aboriginal children, ($20,000)
  • Walgett Shire Council, Fitness track, ($9476)

Capacity Building: partnerships, equity and special populations

  • Cowra Shire Council, Young women's hip-hop for health, ($10,000)
  • Wollongong City Council, Food Access project, ($20,000)
  • Randwick City Council, East Coast Active Kooris, ($10,000)
  • Holroyd City Council, Implementation of City Health Plan, ($20,000)
  • Lithgow City Council, Active Bowenfels- public housing estate, ($20,000) 
  • Forbes Shire Council, Creative Adolescent Support program, ($17,300)
  • Blue Mountains City Council- Youth co-morbidity project, ($19,995)
  • Muswellbrook Shire Council, Caravan park communities project, ($15,400)
  • Blacktown City Council, African 'nadi' club, ($12,500)

It is anticipated that this Grants Program will be offered to councils again in 2008: councils will be informed about priority areas and how to apply via this website late in 2008.
